Hello all,

It’s your friendly neighbourhood gaming-giraffe here, and I wanted to address something which we as a mod team have noticed is becoming more divisive.

Artificial Intelligence.

It’s a topic which provokes strong opinions, and it’s one which some of our members are understandably sensitive about.

At The Gamers’ Tavern, our mission is to create a cozy and safe home where people can find community through gaming, away from some of the pressures and noise outside the tavern walls. To that end we are updating our rules to help ensure that members have control over the discussion topics they see which relate to AI, whilst still supporting open conversation.

Hey everyone! We updated our Writefreely instance to 0.17.0 due to a security fix.

Unfortunately, there's more. Before we could apply the fix, we've been targeted by a spam botnet that registered a lot of users (you'll find the comprehensive list in the second section of the post) and blog posts using the new security hole discovered that the 0.17.0 version addressed. By our investigation the attack happened between yesterday (2026-07-17) and today (2026-07-18)

To reassure you, no data was leaked, the bots were only able to create a blog (named as their username) and a fake post. Nonetheless, this is far from ideal as you may understand and given that the updates for the open source version of Writefreely (compared to write.as, the closed and paid version) are limited and dragging, we will consider moving our blogs to a new service, self-hosted and privacy-first, as always.

Needless to say, the database has been sanitized, the bots have been kicked in the arse and all the fake posts/blogs have been deleted.
